Play and Learn
Group therapy programs have been shown to improve children’s communication and engagement skills in a fun and social way. These groups target social skills in children, but also foster relationships and bonds between parents. At SASHC we offer a range of groups including preschool language groups, school holiday groups and school readiness groups.
SASHC Pre-school language groups (10 week program) are designed to foster and develop:
- Social, play and language skills
- Routine development
- Introduction to sound-letter
- Correspondence
- Energy regulation
- Comprehension through stories
- Turn taking
- Build friendships with children the same age
- Opportunity to engage and participate in a group setting
- Develop turn taking, waiting and sharing skills
It is essential that parents attend the groups with their children to maximise outcomes. Our groups at SASHC are designed to develop parent-child interaction and there is no better way of doing this than having parent and child in the sessions together! Group sizes are typically between 4-6 children
SASHC Lego Group (school holidays)
Lego group that is run for children from 10-15 years of age developing social skills, a sense of camaraderie and creative play in a facilitated setting. These groups typically run for 1.5 hours and parents do not need to attend these groups as the expectation is that children develop the ability to socialise on their own in a setting facilitated by a speech therapist. These groups are particularly beneficial for children who need support engaging with peers and those who have difficulty regulating emotions and feelings. These groups are typically carried with 4-6 children.
SASHC Arts and Craft Group (school holidays)

These groups typically run for 1.5 hours and parents do not need to attend these groups as the expectation is that children develop the ability to socialise on their own in a setting facilitated by a speech therapist. These groups are particularly beneficial for children who need support sharing, requesting for support and engaging with their peers facilitated by a speech therapist. These groups are typically carried out with 4-6 children.
How long does group go for?
Pre-school language group is a 1 hour session per week program over a 9-10 week period (depending on the number of weeks per term). We also provide a single 1 hour pre-school language group session during the school holidays for parents and children that may want to get a feel for the pre-school language group before committing to the 10 week program.
How much do groups cost?
Please see our fees page for guidance on cost. We do require payment prior to the commencement of the program to ensure that there is a commitment from parents and children to the group per term. The group program is most successful when there is a consistent group of children in attendance. Larger groups lower the cost for all involved.
As we require a commitment from parents, missed sessions will not be reimbursed but may be credited the following term.
A 10 week program can be a big commitment for parents, please discuss payment options with SASHC staff if you require further information.
Will I get a written report?
The group therapist will provide verbal feedback to parents on the progress of their children throughout the term. Parents will also have an opportunity to discuss concerns they may have with regard to the development of their children with the therapist at the end of each group session confidentially. There will be no written feedback from each session, however, a written end of term report will be available upon request for our standard fee.
